Kogelo Kids
We recently visited Ojwando Comprehensive School in Alego Usonga (Kogelo area, Ojwando village) and were blown away by this incredible youth group—Kogelo Kids!
The group of 9 talented students (5 girls + 4 boys) brought the spirit of Ohangla dance and song to life.
Meet the young voices:
Britone Omondi, 11 years old
Isaac Ouma, 12 years old
Dedlas Otieno, 12 years old
With Joash Okinyi Oddhiambo (12 years old) on the Nyatiti—which he learned from his father, Mr. Benson Odhiambo.
When our team first met Joahsa two months ago, he only played the Nyatiti. “He’s going to go far, can he sing?” said Tabu
His dad smiled and said: “No worries—when you come back, he’ll be singing.”
Fast-forward to this field trip… and he was singing. And it was really amazing.
Their songs included:
“Dan Owino” – a tribute to their teacher
“Madote Okwadha”
“Patrick Mahero”
Tabu was especially moved by how tight the group was—how smoothly the Nyatiti, vocals, and dance came together.
Back in 2017, Tabu first came here with Singing Wells to record a Luo master musician. That’s when we first heard there was a new generation keeping the tradition alive.\
At Singing Wells, we believe that real cultural preservation is built on trust, time, and return visits—not just one-off recordings. These relationships are really key to our work, especially when working with younger generations.
