What began as a normal Saturday night for high school senior Kobe Devot quickly turned into a life-threatening emergency. A serious car accident left him critically injured and rushed to OU Medical. Based on the information about the extent of Kobe’s injuries from the medical team at OU, Kobe’s family had to come to terms with the possibility of losing him. Then, something no one expected happened.
When his mother sat beside him to say goodbye, Kobe responded to her voice. “I told him, you know, mommy loves you,” she said, “and he shook his head.” A nurse assumed it was a reflex—until he responded again to his grandmother. “Kobe, if you can hear me, stick your tongue out,” the nurse said. He couldn’t speak, but with speech therapy twice a day, he started speaking better.”
Surrounded by compassionate therapists, nurses, and staff, Kobe steadily regained arm mobility and speech. By March 2025, he was discharged, and just two months later, he achieved something that once felt impossible: receiving his high school diploma.
