Aristotle and Clearchus tell us that the first Oracle, Priestess at Delphi, bore the name Phēmonoē: She who speaks the mind of God. Now Chilōn, the sage of Sparta, made a pilgrimage to ask her: ‘what is the most important thing for a human being to learn’? And Phemonoe replied: ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΕΑΥTΟΝ
Centuries later, the disciples of Plato understood the Oracle’s answer in seven ways, as rungs on the ladder of human goodness, the ‘scale of aretē’. Like rising notes on a musical scale:
You can know yourself by understanding what’s outside of you; or by understanding your natural body, and your habitual character [from Phaedo commentary]; or better yet, by knowing the community inside of you, for you are many, bringing harmony to your reason, emotion, desire; and you may know yourself in the act of cleansing (kathartikōs), in release from suffering and distraction; or you may know yourself in a vision (theōrētikōs), seeing yourself set free (heauton… theasêtai); or you may know yourself in eternity and divinity, according to your archetype, your true pattern; and you may know yourself in ecstasy, in individuality and unity: then, in love with your true god (oikeios theos), you act from inspiration (enthousiāi). (Olympiodorus On Alcibiades 172,5-12, supplemented from the Phaedo).
