Socks can be easier to tackle if you know what the pattern is telling you to do. There are many different ways to knit socks, this is an overview of the vocabulary you might see in a traditional, cuff-down, heel flap sock. This video is not intended to instruct you on the knitting of a sock in place of a written pattern, but to help you understand what the instructions are saying and where the pattern is headed.
I used a sock knit using Hermione's Everyday Sock pattern as a demonstration of the sections, here is the listing on Ravelry:

"Small circumference knitting", as I refer to sock knitting, mitten knitting, etc, is often done one of 4 ways: Double point needles, magic loop, 2 circular needles, or 9" circulars. I have videos on the first 3:
