The i-cord cast-on is a neat and tidy way to start a knitting project, but the traditional method leaves a purl ridge and a row of elongated stitches. My hack gets rid of both the ridge right above the i-cord and the elongated stitches!

Knitting How-to: Romi's I-Cord Cast-On (3 stitch i-cord shown). Use a tiny needle (US 0 or 1) along with your working needle (the one you'll be using to complete the project). Cast on three stitches to the tiny needle and then turn work. Using your working needle, knit 2 stitches and then knit into the front and back of the last stitch. Pull stitch tight and move 4 stitches back to tiny needle. Using working needle, knit 3 stitches and then yarn over backwards (right leg of YO will be in back rather than front of the needle). Slip 4 stitches back to tiny needle and repeat. This method works because the i-cord stitches will be long enough to create a stretchy bind-off, but the cast-on stitches on the tiny needle will not be elongated. The i-cord stitches are not considered to be part of the number of cast-on stitches and can be bound off, run up the side, or if knitting in the round: held to graft together with the initial backwards loop cast-on to create an unbroken i-cord.
