Black Beard Projects | Knifemaking Gateway Project @BlackBeardProjects | Uploaded February 2020 | Updated October 2024, 7 hours ago.
My take on making a knife with minimal tools, steel sourced from a 3€ Ikea knife.
Index of operation and materials:
0:24 Knife came sharp but with dent in the bevel
0:42 Test steel hardness with specific files
1:08 This blade is between 55 and 60 HRC (pretty damn hard)
1:20 Cut off plastic handle
1:50 Re-shape profile, grind tip and choil with rotary tool
3:13 Hand shand up to 2000 grit, WD-40 helps with sandpaper
3:50 Buff to mirror polish (I forgot this is minimal tool project, it can be done with rotary tool)
4:00 Cut handle wood, random piece of wood
4:30 Plane to square
5:00 Drill 10mm hole for tang dowel
5:30 Plane to octagon
5:55 Hand sand handle smooth to 400grit
6:20 Measure dowel lenght
6:30 Cut tang groove and dowel to lenght
7:00 Sand the groove to fit the tang, too lose and it won't hold, too thight and it won't fit
7:35 Assemple with a bit of white mineral oil (also serves as finish for the handle)
7:40 A couple of small tamps loch it all the way in
I just started to list some of the stuff I use for my projects in this amazon storefront:
