I’ve always featured Mario titles in these X500 entries of the VGM list, but this is the first time it’s been from a Mario RPG and not one of the mainline titles. But it felt appropriate, since Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a very special game to me and just got its fantastic remake.

TTYD was the game that got me into RPGs as a whole so many years ago and is still one of my favorite games of all time. This is the Paper Mario game that most perfectly blends the series’ unique simplistic take on the genre with enough gameplay depth and story complexity. It’s incredible how well this game holds up 20 years later, and it’s easily the RPG I’ve replayed the most times over the years.

This year’s release is exactly what I wanted from a remake – it polishes up the visuals, rebalances various things, and adds bits and pieces of new content, but mostly keeps this already-perfect game unchanged. I was reassured that this is exactly the masterpiece I remember, now available for a whole new generation of players to discover the past glories of the Paper Mario franchise.

Other than some new bosses, the biggest and best addition to the remake is a whole slew of entirely original music to reduce repetition from the original. There are tons of new battle themes, with each chapter getting its own, as well as new themes for each of the game’s partners which I’ve featured in this compilation. Of these, only Ms. Mowz’s was present in the original game, so it’s great that every partner now has a theme of their own. I also love how the new themes still build on existing music, such as the Yoshi Kid theme remixing the simple “catch the egg” melody from the original or Vivian’s incorporating the theme of the Shadow Sirens (now Three Shadows). These are some of the best and most beloved characters to appear in any Mario game and this feels like it’s giving them (and the whole game) such respect. I really hope this represents a turning point for the Paper Mario series and a return to its glory.
