It's still very much a work in progress.

Check out Scotts channel here -- youtube.com/user/musicbyscottbState of the Game - August UpdateStutter Fox Studios2020-08-12 | Over the last couple of months many systems have been iterated on while others have started to be built form the ground up.
- Combat has seen frequent updates and changes to both systems and controls. For example the ability now select individual weapon mounts on ships.
- A new research screen framework has been developed as well as the initial groundwork for the military screen that will function as a hub for reconnaissance and military based functions.
- A new command crew system has seen its first pass bringing more personality to ships.
- The multi-select and Flotilla/Fleet system has also been updated with a cleaner, more informative interface as well as a picture in picture preview of all ships within the flotilla.
- This video also features a pre-battle track written by Scott Buckley for Falling Frontier. Please check out his music. It's amazing! - www.scottbuckley.com.au
Music by Scott BuckleyRepairStutter Fox Studios2020-07-30 | Falling Frontier's ships are rather expensive and take a while to build so it makes sense to repair what you can, when you can. Ships requesting repair are required to dock at a shipyard that can accommodate the size of the ship. The fire and smoke plumes represent the amount of damage a ship has taken and as a ship is repaired the smoke and fire slowly stops.
This is still very much a work in progress but I wanted to share a glimpse of how this function will work.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auClose CombatStutter Fox Studios2020-07-26 | Falling Frontier features a multi-layered combat system consisting of ship placement, turret movements, ship component hit boxes, projectile ricochets, crew and ammunition requirements, physics driven destruction and visual guides to indicate overall ship health.
This trailer shows all of these systems working together. Please note there are graphical errors at times as this is still very much a work in progress.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auStellar LightingStutter Fox Studios2020-07-11 | While working on the Field of View mechanics for Falling Frontier I thought i'd carry out an experiment and use the same system to generate a mesh that can be used to simulate shafts of light coming from the star. This system would work with the the zoom level of the players camera which would activate and deactivate the fade effect.
This video shows playing around with the system while in the editor itself.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auFaster Than LightStutter Fox Studios2020-07-06 | Falling Frontier for a long time has had the concept of ships traversing at both sublight and faster than light speeds. Since ships could first make an FTL jump it had looked almost like a warp type effect. Today I decided to change that and test out a new jump mechanic and effect. Hope you enjoy!
Please note this is very much a work in progress so there's lots of graphical errors.

This video highlights the early work of this system which is still very much a work in progress. This video also features improvements made to the battle soundscape which includes audio for:

- Selection states on a unit. - Multi unit selection. - Visual markers to show selection. - Storing objects that have been selected. - Deselecting Units that have been selected.

Hope you enjoy!
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auSoundscapeStutter Fox Studios2020-06-19 | During the course of development I've been planning the kind of soundscape I want Falling Frontier to have. Part of that soundscape is that of combat and destruction. Although this is far from final it is a glimpse into the direction that combat and destruction is taking in the audio department.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auRTS Training series - Announcement TrailerStutter Fox Studios2020-05-31 | Hi Everyone,
This is something I've been wanting to do for quite some time which is to record a video tutorial series on how to create some of the fundamental components of a Real Time Strategy game. I don't profess to be any expert in the matter at all. I'm just a guy who over the last 19 months of working on my game Falling Frontier I've learnt some things and some tools which I found handy and I'd love to share the information to those who are also interested in making an RTS game. There might be better ways of doing things but I hope this series will help to put you on the path to implementing some of these concepts into your own game and to potentially come up with your own better way of doing things.
The first set of videos in the series will focus on: - Selecting units and buildings - Moving units - Pushing unit and building details to the UI - Construction - Building placement - Resource collection - Combat
From a graphical perspective the series will use mostly primitives found in Unity but its the underlying code that is important.
This trailer highlights elements from my game Falling Frontier that use some of the principles I plan to teach over the coming months.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auState of the Game - May 2020Stutter Fox Studios2020-05-25 | A lot has been going in the development of Falling Frontier. Many systems have been brought online and now all work together. Below are just a small number of the changes and improvements, some of which are highlighted in this video.
- Expanded game world - Distinction between planet upgrade choices - Animated planetary light growth - Improvements to logistical frame works - Improvements to Combat including the ability to disable ships and for escape pods to be launched depending upon the number of crew remaining - Colonisation Improvements - A Save and Load system allowing for a game to be resumed - Refuelling Platforms brought online - Changes to jump range and fuel requirements - Performance improvements and many others.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auObjectivesStutter Fox Studios2020-03-25 | Whether they be dynamic objectives created on the fly or branching objectives meant to contribute to a narrative objectives can help focus and direct a player in both a linear and non linear way. This video highlights the starting stages of the objectives system in Falling Frontier. Presently they are generated when the game is started however this will later be expanded to be integrated with a missions director that will at times generate context based objectives depending upon the players state of play.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auMining Your Own BusinessStutter Fox Studios2020-03-17 | As the previous video highlighted I've been spending a large amount of time on logistics over the last couple of months. The most basic component of that is the classic resource gathering process. In Falling Frontier it's most simplest form is that of Ore and Fuel. There are other manufactured resource types but they will be covered down the track. Both ore and fuel can be mined from particular asteroids in either in asteroid fields or inside a nebula.
Some asteroids can be collided with and broken apart either by a ship sailing through them or by weapons fire impacting with them. A new resource asteroid identification graphic has been added to clearly indicate which asteroids are valid targets and also what resource type they contain. At the moment orange = ore and blue = fuel.
Enjoy!
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auThe Road to Pre-AlphaStutter Fox Studios2020-03-11 | Since the start of the year the primary focus of development has been logistics. This component is one of the core pillars of game play and influences all other aspects of game play to some degree. From simple resource transfer to supplying assaulting fleets with enough fuel and munitions to hold their ground, logistics are vital.
With that in mind the pre-alpha will be focusing on logistical and economic game play. This trailer shows some of the work that's gone into improving the logistical systems and player feedback loops.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auFalling Frontier Factions PreviewStutter Fox Studios2020-03-02 | Falling Frontier will feature a number of playable factions. Each faction is planned to have its own buffs, debuffs and research tree. These faction characteristics will encourage different game play styles while still allowing all factions to play on a fairly level playing field overall.
The factions featured in this video are a work in progress. The final faction list may consist of more or less then the number featured here.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auFalling Frontier Main MenuStutter Fox Studios2020-02-17 | A menu has a wonderful opportunity to tell a story. My goal for Falling Frontier would be to provide a glimpse into the universe the game is set in.
This menu is currently a work in progress and consists of a number of scenes rendered in real time. All scenes use in game assets and effects. When the player updates their graphical settings the scenes being rendered will update to reflect those changes.
Hope you enjoy.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auState Of The Game - February 2020Stutter Fox Studios2020-02-07 | This video shows a number of the improvements and systems brought into the game since the last video update. These include but aren't exclusive to:
- Celestial group integration - Celestial group colour palate exploration - Updates to Logistical systems to include: - Space ports - Supply sector UI - Updated Logistics screen - 1st pass on supply range indcator - Construction ships and their ability to build outside of a gravity well - Updates to the contextual UI to include: - A new sector category - Colonisation quick commands - Known planet ownership displayed - Asset Organiser UI - Integrated construction costs pushed through to the UI - Integrated Notification system - Research tree framework
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auLogistics TrailerStutter Fox Studios2020-01-05 | Falling Frontier has a rather different take on resources and logistics to other RTS games. Resources aren't global and aren't accessible by any production structure immediately. In Falling Frontier resources get mined and then processed at a Refinery. That Refinery can then provide up to 3 supply routes to Supply Depots which act as the main supply hubs for a player. Supply Depots can provide 3 supply routes to other structures. These may include Production Hubs such as Shipyards or other Supply Depots creating a supply chain from the rear to the front battle lines or between celestial groups to help provide needed supplies to the war or civilian effort.
It's for this reason both logistical facilities and the resource transports travelling the supply routes are vital to a players success and provide an added strategic layer when thinking about expansion and conquest.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.au14 Months of DevelopmentStutter Fox Studios2019-12-27 | It's been 14 months since work began on Falling Frontier. October 2018 saw early visual concepts and prototypes. Coding of the of the game began in December 2018. I thought given it's coming to the end of 2019 that it would be a good time to reflect upon where the project began. Almost 2400 hours of development time has been invested into the project and although a 7 minute video can't even begin to show everything that was achieved it can however show the evolution of an idea from a wish to something tangible. I hope you all enjoy this visual diary of the journey I've been on over the past 14 months.
Music by Scott Buckley - www.scottbuckley.com.auTitan Class Refueling ShipStutter Fox Studios2019-10-15 | Falling Frontier has logistical considerations to keep in mind when pushing beyond the confines of your home planet. Fuel is a vital resource that needs to be managed and distributed for fleets to function effectively. Eliminating a fleets access to fuel can cripple the remaining fleet reducing their jump range or stranding them in deep space.
