This is Day 5 of our Ireland vacation (Part 1)! :)
Since we stayed the night in a hostel in Cork we were all ready to head to the Blarney Castle the next morning to kiss the Blarney Stone! Blarney is about 5 miles outside of Cork. Parking was free, but entry to the castle was €13 for adults and €11 for students. Legend states that kissing the Blarney Stone will give the kisser the "Gift of Gab" which I sometimes desperately need as you've seen in other videos bloopers! ;) They also often describe it as the ability to "deceive without offending", but I'd never want to deceive someone.
Blarney Castle was built and rebuilt multiple times throughout history. The first version was built in 1446 by Cormick McCarthy. The McCarthy clan of Muskerry is one of the most ancient clan in all of Ireland and one member was converted over to Christianity by Saint Patrick!
Once you enter the castle you can go from room to room or follow the signs straight to a highly steep set of spiraling stone stairs (say that 5 times fast!) with a rope hanging down the center to grab onto. The top of the castle gives an amazing views of it's surrounding! Signs with information on the Blarney Stone, it's history, and the castle were all around to read as you waited in line.
We began getting nervous as we watched other people kissing the stone. A man helped you get into position while another took your picture. Luckily they allow you to take pictures or videos of your own since theirs cost €10 each! To reach the stone you had to lie on your back and lean over backwards. You could see straight down to the ground! From our angle we didn't notice the metal bars until after we had kissed the stone.
We were excited to find out that there was a lot more to the grounds than just the castle and dungeons and we did our best to explore all we could in the time we had there. My favourite area to wander was the Poison Garden which had a ton of herbs and plants I had only previously read about in Harry Potter (my hands-down all time most beloved book series). There's also the Blarney House (which was closed while we were there), trails to stroll by a river in the woods, a fern garden complete with artificial waterfall, and Beaver Cave.
