In ancient Egypt, the sacred ibis was associated with Thoth, the god of wisdom, writing, and the moon. They were even mummified as offerings to him.

But seeing one up close is a little less mystical.

This curious ibis decided to skip the formalities and kiss me before I could kiss him.

A few things you might not know about the sacred ibis:

• They were revered in ancient Egypt and frequently mummified as offerings to Thoth
• Their long, curved bills help them probe wetlands for insects, crustaceans, and small amphibians
• They’re highly adaptable and can be found across much of sub-Saharan Africa and parts of the Middle East
• Despite their ancient Egyptian association, sacred ibises are now extinct in the wild in Egypt

Ancient Egyptian deity or curious bird? You decide.

Would you have let this ibis kiss you?

Kiss an ibis!If you had a wiener, you’d do this… Right? This one’s for Pokee.Raccoons are ridiculously clever, but that doesn’t make them good pets. It’s hard not to take one of these cats home.He needs more beer. This little dachshund is Barnaby. This little face belongs to a wild predator.Eight weeks old and already causing chaos. This doesn’t seem real. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. I’ll miss you forever, Pokee. So much. These two California sea lions stole my heart. The quills of the prehensile tail porcupine are barbed, which means they hurt twice!
