In defining VROOOM, Robert Fripp described it as “an inevitable and remorseless forward motion which carries all before it.” When it came to VROOOM VROOOM, Fripp said, “the same but here it comes again”.
One of the last things to be recorded in the THRAK sessions, Trey and Pat, the latter counting in at the start, are panned left, while Tony and Bill sit to the right of the stereo picture.
It’s interesting to be able to hear in detail the heavy lifting done by the team in this Fripp-composed piece. With Trey’s smoother tones providing an underlay to Tony’s treble-oriented punctuation, Pat keeps everything on course while Bill goes off on counterpoint duty.
Another example of clever KC recycling is the middle section, which dates from 1974. Intended for his composition Red, Fripp decided against using it back then. A mere 20 years later, with the dust blown off the manuscript, here it comes again in VROOOM VROOOM. “Definitely alright,” exclaims Pat at the end. Recorded live in one take and no overdubs, he’s not wrong.
