June 16th, 2024 marks the end of coal-fired electricity in Alberta a province that as recently as 2001 got 80% of its electricity from burning coal. This phase-out represents the largest reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Canadian history. Between 2005 and 2020 Alberta reduced greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation by 53%, but there's both a hitch and some hope.
The hitch is natural gas replaced much of the coal generation which produces 60% as much emissions as coal. One the hope side – even without support from the Alberta government renewable energy can now produce more than 30% of Alberta's electricity.
