TalkTV | “King Arthur Was A Cross-Dressing LGBTQ Devotee” | Kevin O’Sullivan @talktv | Uploaded October 2024 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
A Welsh council's educational materials suggest that King Arthur may have been part of LGBTQ+ history. Denbighshire council included the legendary ruler on a timeline highlighting stories of sexual orientation and gender identity.
Arthur's inclusion appears to be based on a Welsh legend where he once wore women's clothing to sneak into a dance in Rhuthun to see a girl. In the story, Arthur later killed a rival, Hueil mab Caw, for mocking him.
While there's no suggestion in traditional tales that Arthur was gay, bisexual, or transgender, this story adds a different dimension to his legendary figure, which is mostly known for his marriage to Guinevere and his leadership as a warlord.
Kevin O’Sullivan and historian Rafe Heydel-Mankoo discuss.
