Meet the Faculty: Kim Schulz | Limnology, Marine Ecology & Environmental Education at SUNY ESF
Get to know Dr. Kim Schulz, a passionate limnologist and marine ecologist at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF). In this Meet the Faculty segment, Dr. Schulz shares her journey from growing up in New York State and studying at Cornell to discovering ESF during her postdoctoral work—and realizing it was the perfect place to teach, research, and mentor students who truly care about the environment.
Dr. Schulz discusses her teaching and research in limnology—the study of freshwater systems like lakes and streams—and how she has transformed her courses into hands-on, experiential learning opportunities. With countless study sites nearby and access to both freshwater and marine ecosystems, ESF offers a unique setting for understanding whole ecological systems.
You’ll also hear about her role in expanding marine studies at ESF, including helping launch marine ecology coursework and collaborating with faculty across disciplines. Beyond the classroom, Dr. Schulz highlights her work with New York State Parks on the Boat Steward Program, where ESF students play a critical role in environmental education and invasive species prevention across New York’s waterways.
