Israel entered a ‘new phase’ of war in the Middle East when thousands of pagers began exploding across Lebanon and the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Soon after, Israeli troops were preparing for another ground invasion of their northern neighbour - for the fourth time in 50 years.

Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have been exchanging cross-border attacks almost daily since the day after Hamas’s brutal attack on 7 October 2023.

As Israel carried out its relentless campaign on the Gaza strip, a series of events have further edged the region closer to all-out war.

So why is this escalation so significant? And why is Lebanon so often the battleground for conflict between Israel and Iran?
