Photographer and National Geographic Explorer Kiliii Yüyan tells the stories of lives bound to the land and sea. Raised in America, he is informed by ancestry that is both Nanai/Hèzhé and Chinese. Yüyan searches for insight into the human relationship to the natural world from different cultural perspectives. On assignment, he has survived a stalking polar bear, escaped pounding waves while diving with otters, and found kinship at the edges of the world.
Yüyan joined Abbe Museum Executive Director Betsy Richards and genome scientist and National Geographic Explorer Keolu Fox on night one of the 2023 COA Summer Institute for a talk entitled Expanding Exploration: Indigenous Futures and Perspectives.
