Alexis Portell, 14, of St. Louis, received her first COVID-19 vaccine — the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine — Thursday, May 13, on the Washington University Medical Campus. Alexis and her mother, Tina Kay, were eager for the teen to get the vaccine, a step toward life getting back to normal for the high schooler. She was one of about 500 people ages 12 to 15 who received a vaccine on the Medical Campus on Thursday, the first day U.S. kids in that age group have been eligible for the vaccine. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advisory committee voted Wednesday to recommend the vaccine for adolescents ages 12 to 15, and CDC Director Rochelle Walensky adopted the recommendation Wednesday evening.
