This course is for PCB designers who already know KiCad and want to work on boards that are genuinely difficult.
You'll design a real, manufacturable Smart USB Thumb Drive — a four-layer board built around an RP2040 microcontroller, a 64 GB eMMC chip in a 153-ball BGA package, two USB-C connectors, high-speed differential pairs, and active power path management. Every engineering decision is made and explained on screen, in KiCad.
The course builds five core skill areas: BGA escape routing and via-in-pad design; controlled impedance and USB differential pair routing; eMMC bus timing and length matching; ideal diode OR-ing circuits; and constrained layout on a real four-layer stackup. These are skills that matter in professional electronics work but rarely appear in beginner or intermediate courses.
To get the most from this course, you should be comfortable with KiCad's schematic and layout tools, and have some familiarity with component datasheets and basic electronics. The Tech Explorations KiCad Like a Pro course covers the foundation if you need it.
This course is the newest addition to the Tech Explorations KiCad series, which also includes Advanced PCB Design With KiCad and High-Speed PCB Design With KiCad.
There are free lectures at the start of the course — watch those first to see exactly what's covered and how the project is structured before you enrol.
