Panama City generates more than 41,000 tons of plastic waste each year, and its rivers carry much of it toward the Bay of Panama. Under The Ocean Cleanup's 30 Cities Program, Interceptor 022 on the Río Abajo and Interceptor 025 on the Río Matías Hernández are now holding that waste back before it reaches the sea.
Across seven major rivers, the project aims to prevent more than 800,000 kilograms of waste from reaching the sea each year and to recover at least 100,000 kilograms of plastic annually, in alliance with local non-profit partner Marea Verde.
Kia has partnered with The Ocean Cleanup since 2022 as a Global Mission Partner, providing funding, mobility solutions and R&D expertise.
