– Kreuzberg and Tempelhof
– 2021 and 2022.
wal-Leil [by the night] is inspired by conversations with my friends Hend Alkahwaji and Wejdan Nassif during theatre rehearsals.
wal-Leili [by the night II] is an imagined conversation with my friend Raman Khalaf. An homage to the jurjina rhythm found in folk music of northern Iraq and Mesopotamia.
In wan-Najmi [by the star], one phrase repeats over and over with subtle changes – inspired by a procrastinating artist (quietly) dancing before a (nearly) stretched, (almost) blank canvas, dreaming up a (new but familiar) pattern.
In Ithā Hawā [to fall / to fall in love], a flâneur takes an early evening stroll along the Landwehr canal in Kreuzberg.
Tadāris [terrains] is an ongoing series of acoustic études – played with mallets, objects and fingers inside and outside the piano.
In Ithā Sajā [if it settles / when it darkens], my left hand keeps a steady rhythm while the right one wanders in search of a nocturnal motif. My eyes peek out the window. It’s the first attempts of dawn.

Electronic four-piece Big Yawn invites five revered artists to reconstruct their debut album No!, originally released in March 2020 through Research Records.
The remixes convey a unique combination of darker textures and brooding sounds, clearly indebted to their source material.
The release features interpretations from Sleep D, Jay Glass Dubs, Maria Moles, Bullant and Raymond Scottwalker.
Rhythm merchants Sleep D (Butter Sessions) up the tempo and weave their signature expansive production in their fearless take on Reflex.

The various sides of Melbourne quartet Big Yawn fluctuate neatly across their debut full length No!. Subtle dub techno delays combine with live drums on Attaboi to formally introduce their clear affectation for the motorik sounds of 70s Deutschland. Previous single Skinrat curiously references off-rhythms and vocal cut ups a la late naughties UK bass music, while abstract jams such as For Whomst channel the adventurous live-and-direct sound of Golden Teacher and kindred experimentalist Inga Copeland.
Heavy low-end bass frequencies and twitches of dub fx permeate the LP, shades of post-punk and loopy minimal wave (Doodle Damage) contrasting with the more jagged dance orientated moments. In opting to close No! with their most expansive recording (Body Double), Big Yawn delve deeper into the tense and ritualistic atmospheres the prior tracks only hint at. The effect seems akin to a snapshot into their lengthy freestyle practice sessions; a process honed and refined here for the LP format. Until their next outing, the relentless groove of Anthem X will keep hips swaying during those sweaty early morning club hours.")

Rafet studied music from a young age. Tertiary education brought about further teachings in jazz. Growing up in the family village of Miniara (North Lebanon) saw to an inquiry into maqamat and traditional arabic musics post study. After composing for multiple ensembles and performing in various projects over the years, Rafet settles into his own artistry with You Are In The Embrace of The History. This body of work is one that is personal; sighting connection to a land, spirit and devotion to a holy other.
You Are In the Embrace of The History delivers longing with grace, a realisation of ancestral memory with the eloquence of an internal knowing. Finding home in the cradle of the poem, a universal affirmation lies deep within an irregular heartbeat.
The listener is offered an invitation to enter into the vista of expansive harmonic voicings, anticipating resolution. The work is edged by expressions of spiritual jazz and tempered by the scope of ambient musics.
Rafets offering has the humility to pose questions (the illumination and the ecstasy). In the Dead Sea, there are no fish.")

About This Release:
Odlazak – the third full-length from multidisciplinary artist and musician Ivan Masic as Ex Ponto – takes its name from the Serbian word for departure. It’s a theme that reverberates throughout the release as the motifs of departure, arrival and the journey between the two are woven into an intimate personal narrative from 1980s Yugoslavia to contemporary suburban Coburg and back. Odzalak feels like a bookend to a decade of concerted, illuminating visits to the place of his birth and a countenance to the departure that long defined his youth.
Alongside Ex Ponto’s signature mix of electronic and organic textures, Masic has interspersed moments of exchange from his homeland. The haunting sound of the gusle — a traditional Serbian instrument played by his ancestors — opens the album, alongside 40-year-old VHS recordings of family members reflecting on life and death. The cover was designed by long-time friend Rick Milovanovic (TRiC), whilst photographs from Masic’s visits to Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina by his wife, photographer Sarah Pannell, are featured on the inner sleeve. The release was mastered and partially mixed by Belgrade-based Goran Simonoski (La Plant), a collaboration rooted in shared lineage and a mutual love of the darker edges of the sonic spectrum.
Taking cues from ambient to kosmiche, dub to post punk and everything in between, this is a sonic journey as much as it’s a personal one. Part Balkan Bladerunner soundtrack, part Vini Reilly in wonderland, Odzalak is Ex Ponto’s most pointed and heady release to date, equally at ease in the club and at home.")

Packed full of DIY dub mixing, cosmic orchestration and raw, percussion driven polyrhythms, the recordings have been remastered and put to vinyl for the first time with sections from Casual Rhythms Vol. 1 being re-shaped into previously unavailable single tracks. Recording plays a big role in the Elite Beat creative process. The studio as an instrument. Much of the Elite Beat music is mixed in an all-hands-on-deck dub style approach - live with an analog mixer and loads of FX being thrown and dubbed in real time. The sound is genre-less rhythm music with an emphasis on live playing, free form expression and technique that borrows from soundsystem culture. Inspiration can be heard from all parts of time and place. Some Ethio Jazz, Black Ark psychedelia, Exotica, Malian blues, even Haight-Ashbury in the summer of love. Each member an accomplished musician in their own right, Elite Beat thrive on collaboration. 2018 saw the release of their astral-Saharan jams with celebrated Taureg guitarist Mdou Moctar. The players get together every Wednesday evening, sometimes to chat, sometimes to play. The ‘record’ button gets pressed when they find what they are searching for. Bullant (Flightless Records) pulls the listener out abruptly with a rework of Skinrat, a house-streaked churner.
