A keystone species is an organism that has a disproportionately large impact on its ecosystem relative to its population size.

A keystone is the stone at the top of an arch. It may look like just one small part, but it helps hold the whole arch together. Take the keystone away, and the arch can collapse.

In nature, some species work in a similar way. They have a much bigger effect on their ecosystem than their numbers might suggest.
Beavers are a classic example. By cutting branches and building dams, beavers slow down streams. Water pools behind the dam, and a wetland begins to form. Soon, that wetland becomes a home for many other living things — fish, frogs, insects, birds, and water plants.
The beavers have not just made a dam. They have created a whole habitat. Some keystone species hold their world together by what they eat. Beavers do it by what they build. But if the beavers disappear, the dam is no longer repaired. Over time, gaps open, water flows through, and the wetland starts to drain. As the water level falls, reeds and pond plants shrink back. Fish, frogs, insects, and birds lose places to feed, hide, and breed. The stream is still there, but the rich wetland community is mostly gone.

That is why beavers can be called keystone species. Remove them, and the effects can spread through the whole ecosystem.
