KEN Mode's sound is often defined as "noise rock", but the experience of listening to a full length of these Manitobans can drive you way further than this label would suggest. Mixing up desperate screams with dissonant melodies and well placed keyboard parts result in a weird concoction, which can be an often challenging, but rewarding experience nonetheless.
With a Juno Award win in 2012, four other nominations and several albums under their belts, it seemed there was nothing left to prove for KEN Mode, but they kicked it up a notch with the addition of multi-instrumentalist Kathryn Kerr in 2021. Kathryn had already played on 2018's "Loved", and her role in the band gained a little more prominence on their upcoming album "NULL", to be released on September 23rd via Artoffact Records.
The eight songs of "NULL"include the tension-filled "Unresponsive" and the deceivingly titled "A Love Letter", along with the ten minute epic "Lost Grip"."NULL" will be part of a two-album arc,and the rest of the material is already written, with the tentatively titled follow up "Void" scheduled for release next year. In order to promote "NULL", the band will go on tour in North America, starting with an album release party in their hometown of Winnipeg, on September 23. Sonic Perspectives collaborator Rodrigo Altaf spoke with KEN Mode's singer and guitarist Jesse Matthewson about the new album, and the pair discussed a myriad of other subjects, such as plane tickets, working with a sibling in the band, winters in Canada and more.
