If you were to ask Joey Quiñones where he found inspiration for his music, you wouldnt have to look far from where the East LA son grew up. Listen to his work, and youre transported to a two-block radius of his neighborhood—from the liquor store to Sign of Music record store on Whittier Boulevard and back to a homies house. In those two blocks, you hear cumbia blaring from the stores, punk rehearsals from a garage, oldies drifting from a neighbors yard—a sensory overload that follows you home, all those genres singing in your head at once.
This isnt a revelation to longtime fans of Quiñones music. He has established himself as a premier interpreter of his generation, dedicating his career to offering his unique perspective on the Chicano soul songbook. But before Thee Sinseers, before the lush orchestrations and pitch-perfect harmonies that became his signature, Quiñones cut his teeth leading various backing bands for visiting Jamaican ska and dancehall acts touring Southern California. He describes those years as reggae college, getting yelled at by every Jamaican artist who had a record out. Those years of apprenticeship in rock steady and roots reggae would inform everything that followed—and on his new solo record Inna Soul Steady Situation, Quiñones finally showcases those influences front and center.
That quintessential blending of styles rings out immediately on the opening track Soul Steady Situation—Quiñoness vocals enter like a selector toasting over the riddim, an alarm call announcing his intentions with an urgency that feels club-ready and immediate. Then comes the classic drum fill, dropping into a rock steady groove that establishes the vibe: this is dancehall-infused soul meant for movement, not just contemplation. Its a deliberate departure from Thee Sinseers lush orchestrations, stripped down to showcase the Jamaican foundations that have always lived beneath Quiñoness work.
Before you know it, youve taken off on a sonic soul spaceship with Quiñones at the helm, supported by his two-person crew: Eric Johnson from Thee Sinseers on saxophone and Eleazar from the Brown Boyz on piano, as you cruise across silver-lined clouds and dip your toes into dreamy moonlit grooves found on Dont Let Go, Driftin and One More Night.
What Quiñones manages to do on this record is prove time and time again that he is an artist willing to take risks and continue to show his prowess when it comes to experimenting with different styles, while still being able to authentically express himself.
With that authentic self-expression, Quiñones and his crew manage to squeeze in some lighthearted fun as well, establishing a sense of equilibrium to counteract the heavier emotional overtones found on previous Sinseers efforts. A perfect example is Bolsita, a tongue-in-cheek party song paying homage to iconic anthems like Tequila by The Champs and Tighten Up by Archie Bell & the Drells. But Quiñones doesnt stop there—he folds in electric boogaloo, early Ray Charles big band energy, and the Latin soul flourishes of Joe Cuba and Willie Colón, creating something that feels both nostalgic and fresh. Eric Johnsons saxophone takes center stage, adding playful solos that widen the sonic spectrum. The term bolsita, which translates to little bag, serves as the lingua franca for lets get the party started—its admittedly corny, Quiñones will tell you, but its the kind of song where everybodys going to shout along whether they like it or not. And thats precisely the point.
By the time you reach the end of the record, having followed Quiñones across various genres and eras, you realize youve witnessed an artist in his prime doing what the best always do: capturing something deeply specific—Chicano identity, East LAs sonic DNA—and in that specificity, revealing something universal. Its music that transcends age, race, geography, and class precisely because it refuses to sand down its edges. Cross-generational talent building timeless appeal, one genre-blurring groove at a time.

Written and drilled over countless soundchecks and rehearsals for a myriad of different bands, Easy initially seemed to exist as a sort of secret instrumental track for a fictitious hip hop album that was never released. It starts lazily, the piano floating around the drums and bass. A big staircase of sound emerges as the piano gradually steps down into an isolated drum beat. The track finishes with an almost hopeful coda, a shout chorus with the single note on the Hammond swelling to the climactic ending. “This track harkens back to late nights walking around the city without any real place to go,” Okonski says, “With no real purpose or destination in mind but ending up right where you were supposed to be.”
This liberated Okonski track features Steve Okonski on keys, Aaron Frazer on Drums, and Michael Montgomery on bass.

What’s the Matter, M Ross?, the third installment from the idiosyncratic M Ross Perkins, finds our boy on an inward journey, exploring the transcendental and existential with his most lyrically confessional album to date. It’s a record that serves notice that multi-instrumentalist Perkins belongs amongst the singer/songwriter zeitgeist that has swooned over MJ Lenderman and Waxahatchee while serving as a conduit to optimism.
Composed, performed, and recorded completely by Perkins in his Dayton, OH studio, What’s the Matter… is both the most stripped down and expansive within his tryptic of albums. The headphone symphonies move with a deliberate, composed sophistication while the lyrics explore fresh territory, turning the camera away from the “butterscotch revue” and pointing it into a mirror. The touchstones of psych pop remain: flourishes of Nilsson are still here, but so are Gram Parsons and Jonathan Richman. If you want to assign geography to What’s the Matter, M Ross?, the album is equal parts Laurel Canyon and Big Pink, more Woodstock the town than the festival. Perkins is a self-contained (late-period) Teenage Fanclub with George Harrison’s spiritual sense of inner wanderlust.
Jonathan Richman once said, “Poetry, if you love it, it works its way into your conversations and into anything you do.” Perkins’ new album is replete with the poetry of creation and living, signaling a sea change in how he writes and creates music. That end yield can be heard in the album’s lead track “Hey Man/Hey Self,” a song that marries signature Perkins’ ear for a cosmic pop hook with the contemplative.
“I am a filter for raw experience,” explains Perkins. It’s a thought that provides a window into his artistic process, which evolved between his Karma Chief debut and What’s the Matter, M Ross? He continues, “The writer puts one hand on the universe — the bare wire — and puts [the other hand] on the shoulder of the human being, the listener/the reader, and just acts as this conduit between some reality undistilled that becomes consumable through this filter of my consciousness.”

There She Goes arrives in full panoramic sound — western reverb guitar shimmering like a desert sunset at the edges, horns bringing a sweeping big-band grandeur to the center, with the Delfonics, Chi-Lites, and Stylistics as its soul orchestration touchstones. The protagonist is searching for a way to mend a broken heart, and what makes the track land is how human that search feels — held up by a call-and-response between Quiñones and the band that moves between longing and resolve like a conversation with yourself at 2 a.m. Theres no performance of heartbreak here, just the real thing.

Elated was recorded at Ryan Pollies studio on Los Angeles with a simple goal in mind - to have one complete song at the end of the session. Reverend Baron describes the track as A simple song and a familiar sentiment. This song bottled the energy of that day. I mixed it and found myself leaving, and even accentuating, the imperfections. The noises and the crackles along with the playful sounds and melodies I hope support the elation.
