I just made 100 videos of nothing but wavetable synth music from the HuC6280a (PC Engine, Turbografx16, Supergrafx, and PC FX) and I made them to share with you on YouTube!
These are all pulled from the .hes files in Audio Overload. Where I knew the track names, I shared them. Otherwise, I just put the track number in the .hes file.
This is a sound system that is very underexplored, underestimated, and underappreciated. It is often panned as sounding "12-bit." And indeed, sometimes it was used in such a way that it did sound as much like NES as it did Genesis or SNES. But the fun thing the PCE sound is that it is wrong, therefore, to assume that the system was not powerful enough to do more, or sound better. When used right, the sound system held its own perfectly well against either of the major 16-bit systems. Sometimes it does sound sorta NES-ish, yes. But it also sounds most like Genesis sometimes, and it even sounds like SNES sometimes. But most of all, it doesn't really sound like any of them. It's its own animal more than anything else. That's the joy of wavetable synthesis, and the joy of the HuC6280a....I picked tracks that showcase the system at all these use levels, NES-like, Genesis-like, SNES-like, and none-of-the-above.
