Are people with Tourette syndrome (TS) 'otherwise normal'? Is it really possible to 'overcome' TS, or to reveal the "real" person behind the tics? Sophia Maier argues that not only is normalcy unrealistic, but also undesirable. In this presentation, Maier, a queer trans woman, encourages her audience to embrace the "weird" side of the disorder. Rather than an individual medical problem, Maier sees TS as a product of social conditions. Based on her personal experiences as well as her rhetorical analyses of old medical texts, Maier discovers that TS carries the potential for political critique and weird coalitions.
