Apologizes after backlash
Comedian Kathy Griffin apologized late Tuesday for posing in a photo shoot holding a fake bloody mask resembling the head of President Donald Trump.

The image, published earlier in the day in a tweet by TMZ, was shot by provocative celebrity photographer Tyler Shields. Griffin and Shields said they intended to make an anti-Trump political statement, but the gruesome image drew immediate backlash from conservatives and liberals alike.
In a tweet, the president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., called it “disgusting but not surprising. This is the left today. They consider this acceptable. Imagine a conservative did this to Obama as POTUS?”
Our politics have become too base, too low, & too vulgar,” tweeted former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, “but Kathy Griffin’s post descends into an even more repugnant & vile territory.”
Many outspoken liberals immediately denounced the image as well. Chelsea Clinton, whose mother, Hillary, lost the presidential election to Trump, called the image “vile and wrong. It is never funny to joke about killing a president.” Actress and outspoken Trump critic Debra Messing tweeted: “It wasn’t right when peoplel [sic] hung lynched Obama effigies, just as what Kathy Griffin did isn’t right now.”
