“Kate Davis is a force, but not the in-your-face kind. She exists like a breeze, trailing slowly and ghostly before delivering a healthy dose of gut-punch goodness to unsuspecting listeners. She’s been a prolific performer in the jazz scene, co-wrote Sharon Van Etten’s recent smash “Seventeen,” and collaborated as bassist and vocalist for Postmodern Jukebox. Now, she makes her indie-rock debut with “rbbts.”
Penning a narrative of nostalgia, Kate crafts a stirring ballad-turned-anthem. “rbbts” starts off moody with down-tempo strums coated in emotion, unrelenting in their regularity while Kate’s voice — a haunting lilt — leaves poetic lyrics in its wake. For nearly two minutes, there’s a luxe languor to “rbbts,” built on drowsy kick-drum beats and tender strums, but later, the song erupts into a crush of soaring indie-rock rhythms as the percussion gets angrier, the guitar gets twangier, the vocals get more combative.
As quickly as the chorus comes in, it’s gone again, leaving a looming trill sent humming as Kate takes her time offering an eerie bridge, “meet me in the morning indigo skylight twilight,” before the song concludes with a dynamic crescendo packed with the unapologetic fire Kate had been sneaking us micro-doses of from its very beginning. “rbbts” opens as a simmer but it ends in flames — it’s the kind of song that entrances from its first note only to continue to shock the senses in that quiet, humble way that masterminds like Kate Davis can achieve.“ — The Music Mermaid, Jun 18, 2019
