In 2015 the Kansas State Department of Education created the Kansans Can School Redesign model that allows school districts the flexibility to change the structure and modalities of teaching to fit the needs of their students and communities. In 2021 KSDE and Kansas State University worked together to document the journey of six different school districts undergoing redesign. Leavenworth redesign starts at David Brewer Elementary school with a strong emphasis in social-emotional learning. Two highlighted in their story is their adult mentoring program and service-learning projects that help students give back to the community.
