Dark Asylum is the 14th studio album by the American power/symphonic metal band Kamelot, officially released on August 28, 2026, via Napalm Records.
It is a concept album set in a dark Neo-Victorian world, centering on RavenHill Asylum—a grand, ancient cathedral converted into an institution where science, faith, memory, and madness coexist in a tense, unsettling manner. The narrative follows a soul trapped in a world of masks, fragmented memories, and psychological torment, wandering the asylum's endless corridors in search of truth, identity, and redemption. What begins as a descent into darkness gradually transforms into a journey of awakening, offering the possibility of healing, hope, and a path to "Sanctuary."
The album explores the duality of human nature: fear and hope, chaos and stillness, destruction and healing. According to vocalist Tommy Karevik, it invites the listener into the hidden chambers of the human mind, where every door reveals a different yet interconnected story. Salvation is not something external, but something that already exists within us. Guitarist and founder Thomas Youngblood describes the work as an immersive experience that blurs the lines between reality and madness through theatrical storytelling, haunting atmospheres, and deeply emotional themes.
Musically, Dark Asylum deepens the cinematic, theatrical, and atmospheric style characteristic of Kamelot, featuring grand orchestrations, striking melodies, memorable hooks, and darker, more somber passages. It incorporates the band's classic symphonic power metal elements alongside progressive and introspective moments, and even touches of folk and ethereal styles. The album was produced by longtime collaborator Sascha Paeth, with mixing and mastering by Jacob Hansen.
