Too many times it managed to un-attach itself and drift away from our boat. We have sailing Zatara to thank for rescuing our tender three times! So imagine our surprise when we discovered a lone dinghy, floating out to sea. We jumped in the Highfield and raced o to retrieve it, giving us the chance to pay it forward, retrospectively! We couldn't have made the rescue without the aid of our friends, Claire and Adam, who are taking a break from cycling the world to come sailing a little slice of the Thailand with us, in fact, as we go island hopping the pristine south west coast archipelagos another patron, Clint, his son Ollie and nephew Brock join us too, it's a full house. We suspect he swam aboard from a nearby boat. Now as we prepare our floating home to sail around the coast we have to take him with us. As we sail we learn how another rodent that crept aboard a camper van managed to inflict $30 000 worth of damage, in one night, by chewing through the electrics, we want to ensure we evict our stowaway as quickly as possible.When our freezer stops working is it a coincidence or is the rat to blame?In New Zealand Rob has been staying on our friends farm. Oh no! vermin infestation on our sailing boat The Cruising Kiwis 2024-01-13 | Boat Life : There's a vermin in me kitchen We have been sailing our floating home around the world for the last five years and have recently taken our beautiful kitten Mocha onboard, how ironic therefore that for the first time ever we have a rat onboard the boat and Mocha is no use at all. Ivan and I returned from an evening of exercise to find the rat waiting or us. While sailing our liveaboard sailboat through the beautiful, tropical, south Thailand islands, we encounter a near fatal free diving accident. Our son Finn experienced a deep water blackout, or in layman's terms passed out underwater while surfacing from a 30m, 100ft free dive with no fins. Luckily is father had been keeping an eye on him, spotted him unconscious seven metres below the surface and, together with Finn's brothers, worked as a family to drag Finn back to safety, where they applied CPR until Finn regained consciousness. So it was less than ideal to have to call into a hospital not once but twice. Not the nicest place to take a dip but the only way to get going again is send someone into the water to remove the plastic bag by hand. Who ys gonna call - The expendable middle child. This year he qualified for the New Zealand rowing team. After winning a silver medal at the Under 23 world Championships he caught covid. Living on a sailing catamaran constantly moving from anchorage to anchorage, remote tropical island to white sand peninsula doesn't sound too bad but there were big sacrifices made to make this happen and big sacrifices going on still. I believe it is our sailing teens, Declan and Ivan who have sacrificed the most for this nomadic lifestyle. They often go months without seeing other kids their age to interact with so it was wonderful moment, on Tioman Island, when a group of beautiful bikini clad teenagers swam out to the boat. The boys made instant friends and disappeared of to the beach with them to hangout and play football.Our eldest son Finn has made plenty of scarce too for his sport. Training hard, missing social events and getting to bed early in an attempt to make it to the top in his chosen sport, rowing. However, it turned into a terrifying dodging of ships as the weather closed in and heavy storms reduced visibility. A squall ripped our sail and the heavy rain white out resulted in us narrowly escaping a collision with an oil tanker. More than 300 large container ships and oil tankers pass through this area everyday. In the Singapore strait these ships get squashed together by the bottleneck created with Singapore to the north and the Indonesian Islands to the south. Unfortunately although we know the dangers of pulling off the Malacca Strait to anchor, we didn't think we would get caught by the scam practiced by a few of the fisherman here. They throw their nets out upstream of your boat then allow them to drift down, trapping your boat.The fisherman next demands money because you have damaged his net by having your boat in his net! After spending two weeks sailing down the south west coast of Thailand with our crew of sailing teenagers we now find ourselves and our live aboard cruising catamaran back at Rebak Island Marina, getting ready to haul out for the second time in two months. The alarm and warning light, that indicates a water leak past the first Flange or diaphragm on the sail-drive into the sealed cavity has been sounding intermittently. To ignore this warning sign could sink the boat. So another haul out it is. We will remove the sail-drives, replace the the diaphragms and while we are at it change all the oil seals as well.Later that week we found a tiny kitten in need of rescue. Hit by a car, malnourished, bleeding and overheating Declan and Chanelle carried the kitten back to the boat where we feed her, bathed her and gave her the love that she needed. While walking into town on the remote island of Koh Lipe, Thailand we passed the football pitch where several local kids were hanging out. Our sailing teenagers got involved and soon more joined and game of soccer ensued. Unfortunately for Ivan, while saving a trio of balls from the goal, he rolled his foot causing injury, a possible broken bone. This is boat life in Thailand, visiting remote islands, camping on beaches and hiking through the rainforest in search of waterfalls and best of all meeting the people. Not once but twice.We have been sailing our floating home along the beautiful coast of Thailand getting to know the country better, immersing ourselves in the culture by signing our sailing teens up to a Muay Thai, kick boxing class. We have been enjoying the freedom of travelling around the many tropical islands, on hired mopeds. However, while traversing Phuket, the boys unfortunately crashed their moped, ending up under a truck and injuring themselves in the process. The police were called. Having heard terrible stories about Thai police dealing with tourists harshly, we spent several tense minutes believing they would throw the book at us. However, the reality was quite different.Fast forward a few days and an incredibly stupid decision on our part, made while pulling up a mooring line, resulted in us once more rubbing shoulders and causing friction with the the water authorities in Phang Nga Bay. Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of. The plan? To sail around the world. Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978.
