On August 30, the Maritime Radio Historical Society (MRHS) marine radio station transmitted an encrypted message that was encrypted using an Enigma machine. Radio station KPH transmitted the message on its shortwave frequencies using Morse Code and teletype, RTTY. A damaged page from the German code book was displayed on their website. This page, along with information in the message header, allowed code breakers to decrypt the message.
I set all of the KPH frequencies into my IC-7610 memories to allow quick selection of frequency to find the strongest signal. I used FLdigi and CWGet to decode Morse Code. For RTTY decoding, I used FLDigi, MMTTY, and the RTTY decoder built into the IC-7610.
After the message was received, the fun started with the decryption. I used a web-based Enigma machine along with a video that described the decrypting process.
