"Justify My Love" was surrounded by controversy. The song was written by Ingrid Chavez and Lenny Kravitz but initially credited to Kravitz alone with additional lyrics by Madonna. A lawsuit was filed and settled out of court. The original single mix used a sample of the Public Enemy track "Security Of The First World" without giving credit, although the PE track itself was made from a sample of "Pussyfooter" by Jackie Robinson. The music video was banned for its sexual content.
The "Hip Hop Mix" replaces the PE track with new samples from Tom Scott And The L.A. Express, James Brown, Pleasure, Grover Washington, Jr. and a different Public Enemy song.
None of this hurt the song's performance as "Justify My Love" became Madonna's ninth #1 single, and a VHS video single release sold over 1 million copies.
