Running on 8 hours of sleep in about 3 days with 20 sets of my favorite props and 6 new batteries, I stepped out onto my home field to fly. I had some lines in mind and some thoughts about new things I could try, but really, I just needed to unwind myself a little bit and get some FPV Therapy.
As I reviewed the footage, I realized that all of it was flawed in some subtle way. I bounced off the ground here, or tried to bury the quad there. One time I almost flew into myself. But I started to see a consistent theme, maybe a theme through all of my flying: just keep flying.
It's a little like my life, to be quite honest. There have been so many times in my life where I could have sat down and quit. And you know what, no one would have blamed me. Childhood cancer, mental illness, a couple separations, epilepsy, addiction... It feels like the list of tragedies in our lives go on and on.
But sometime around when cancer struck one of our children, I had an epiphany. The future was uncertain, terrifying, even. We couldn't go back to where we had been. We had crossed a major threshold in life. We had no clear path forwards or backwards. So one day, after a couple months in and out of the hospital, I realized that I just needed to do one thing: put one foot in front of the other. Just keep walking.
There was no telling at that time where we'd end up, or even who we would end up there with. Would I be a father of 3 or 2? Would my wife and I be together? Would my sanity hold out under the worst possible conditions as I lost so much sleep?
One foot in front of the other.
I'm the father of 3, all healthy. My wife and I are together. I'm mentally stable. I'm no longer an addict. It took a long time to get here, but it only took one foot in front of the other.
