Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom picks up a three years after the last movie. The volcano on the island where Jurassic World theme park is located is set to go off very soon. Claire is contacted by a friend of a former colleague and together they set out to save as many dinosaurs as they can from the island.
Because Hollywood editors in today's day and age suck at their job and give away major plot points in the trailers you already know going in that Claire is betrayed and the dinosaurs are going to be auctioned off to the rich.
The story in Fallen Kingdom is really lackluster. It’s not the story itself, it’s the presentation of information coupled with some mediocre acting. For starters, the reasons the writers give to bring back the characters of owen grady and Claire dearing are boring. There are numerous other personnel from the park staff that could have been brought back besides chris pratt and Bryce howards characters. BUT what would the new trilogy be without them right? Once the characters leave the spectacular special effects behind from the island the story slows down quite a bit on the mainland. There is a lot of talking going on trying to make you feel the gravity of what’s happening but not really hitting the mark. The third act picks the pace back up quite a bit and finishes the movie on a better note, but still not really making you feel like you saw a movie that pushed the franchise forward.
Behind the camera it’s obvious that a lot of people worked hard to make the movie great. The final product looks and sounds gorgeous. Cameras used on Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom include Arri Alexa and Panvision. The movie was recorded in 6.5k so when it’s released for home media it should look amazing on your 4k tv. The visuals are stunning, with exquisite detail and great colors giving a pleasing aesthetic. The HDR for this movie is nice, but I don’t believe it’s the best I’ve seen. Blacks are fairly deep without disappearing completely but at times do seem a little washed out. The highlights also seemed a little too bright to me. The oranges and reds that come on screen during action sequences really stick out quite nicely because of the blue and green hues that are constantly on screen.
The sound editing for Fallen Kingdom is fantastic. My local Regal RPX has an Auro 3D surround sound system built into it which I believe to be superior to Dolby Atmos and DTS:X in regard to both direction and vertical sound. When you watch the movie the subtlest of noises come alive and really engage you with what’s happening on screen. You can tell the audio engineers put some time into mixing the tracks here. All the speakers seemed fully engaged during the action sequences drawing you in that much more because of the realistic positioning of sounds.
The acting in the movie is another area that Jurassic World misses the mark. Let’s be honest, Chris Pratt doesn’t act, he just plays himself. We all overlook this though because he has a likable personality and is funny. Another person you might like is Justice Smith who plays the part of Franklin Webb, one of Claire’s assistant. It’s not so much his acting as his amazing girly shrill he does so well that’ll bring a smile to your face. However, almost everyone else in the movie is a B actor hired in an A budget movie.
Michael Giacchino music score is another area that disappoints. While he uses some familiar tunes from the Jurassic franchise to hook you in for nostalgia all other music in the movie is generic and disappoints considering his credentials in Hollywood.
The biggest accolade for this movie has probably got to go to director Juan Antonio Bayona. Unlike the first movie which I though very boring Bayona brings a new feel to the Jurassic franchise that I picked up on immediately in the first ten minutes. Editing and camera direction are all evidently different from the last Jurassic world in a good way. For instance even though you know the main characters are not going to die Bayona creates some genuine moments of suspense.
With all of the faults Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom has, it is still a fun movie to see. The presentation of the film from the post production staff is done well and there is a lot of humor spread throughout allowing for a fun popcorn flick during the summer. I’d recommend seeing this on the big screen when you get the chance.
