🃏 Why did Jung see the Trickster as our most ancient archetype? In 1954 he wrote the only full essay he ever devoted to it — a foreword to Paul Radin’s Winnebago Trickster tales. Far from Bugs Bunny or Loki, this figure is raw, grotesque, and undomesticated: tearing itself apart, humiliating itself, dissolving boundaries. Jung called it a preserved fragment of the archaic psyche — subhuman and divine all at once. In this deep dive we trace the Trickster’s evolution: from Winnebago myth to the Bayeux Tapestry, from Hermes and Mercurius in alchemy to Reynard the Fox in medieval satire, and finally into modern comedy and daily life slips. What emerges is Jung’s warning: the Trickster is the collective shadow, both destroyer and forerunner of transformation — laugh with him, or be undone by him.
