What the?!? A poll published on the first of the month? Have I gone mad?!? Truth be told, I don't know, but it's here already! Six new samples ready to duke it out for victory!

The first piece is called "What World is This?" It's an enchanted, fantasy track with an airy celeste, flighty flute runs and bouncy strings. I was getting an older kid's movie feeling from this one, but I couldn't quite put my finger on which it was. Maybe something like "The Rescuers." I don't know. All I know is I felt surrounded by magically magical things made of magic!

Next up is "Rōnin Hide." This is an action track with heavy percussion, a gritty guitar, orchestral brass and an obvious Asian leaning with the plucked strings and Xiao flute that takes the lead. I imagined a showdown with a wandering warrior in the middle of the woods. Luckily for me, I'm a master of Corn Fu, so he'll have his hands full.

The third track is an unnamed "Hybrid Spanish Beat." This track underwent one of the most wacky, drastic transformations from inception to finish that I've experienced yet. When I first wrote the 12 second intro with just the drums and the synth bass, I envisioned a dark, science fiction track about defending against an onslaught of futuristic super-soldiers. The actual working title I had the file saved under is "Sci-Fi Troopers Invasion."
Then something weird happened. I started messing with an acoustic guitar, some accompanying strings and brass, and it completely jumped the rails and turned into some kind of hybrid hip-hop beat with a bit of Spanish flair. I don't know... Don't ask me. I only wrote it.

The fourth is called "I'll Carry Your Light." It's a sad track starting with an electric harp. The orchestral string sections join in after the first go round and set the tone for the piece. This is built to be a dramatically sad with a lot of impact. I was feeling particularly down and out when I came up with this melody. I was humming it to myself and began to make up little lyrical phrases before finally writing it at the computer.

Then we have a hybrid, western track called "I Said Spaghetti, Pardner." The idea behind this was heavily influenced by the idea of old spaghetti westerns (obviously), but with a bit of a modern twist. I had visions of this being a dark, hero theme. Someone who walked the line between just being barely good enough to be considered the hero, but he had to do a lot of questionable things in the name of justice.

And lastly, we have "Down the Rabbit Hole." This is an atmospheric track with some melodic instruments mixed with weird sounds. The guitar immediately made me feel like I was lost in the middle of nowhere, and the more I tried to find a way out, the more I became acutely aware just how deeply stranded I was. The brief cello lines almost provided a sense of light whimsy or hope in contrast to everything else, but then we're immediately sucked back into some twisted netherworld with the mangled bells.
