Dundee City Council won three awards at 2018’s Fleet Heroes, leading the way in clean and efficient transport. Among these achievements was the Ultra Low Emission Fleet Hero Award, sponsored by BMW Group. Then editor of Fleet World Magazine Alex Grant tells us more about what made this council so successful.
The Ultra Low Emission Fleet Hero Award recognises public or private sector organisations which have adopted a significant number of ultra low emission vehicles (ULEVs) as a proportion of their total fleet, or has taken an innovate approach in integrating ULEVs.
Dundee City Council has invested in 89 electric vehicles, accounting for 25% of its fleet. Council staff have driven approximately 1.1 million zero-emissions, saving an estimated 220,000 tonnes of CO2 and improving quality air.
Their efforts stretch beyond change within the council, to public engagement campaigns such as Drive Dundee Electric, which promotes the benefits of electric vehicles and hosts community events, such as an EV Christmas Parade, and “Chat and Charge” gatherings for drivers to share their electric vehicle knowledge.
