The book of Judges describes Israel’s tragic life in the Promised Land after the death of Joshua and before the rise of the monarchy. It is a sobering bridge between the conquest under Joshua and the kingdom era that begins in Samuel. Joshua ends with Israel renewing its commitment to serve the LORD, but Judges shows how quickly that commitment faded when a new generation arose that did not know the LORD or the works He had done for Israel.
If you think the Bible is irrelevant today, open whatever news app you use on your phone and compare the stories of today with the stories of Judges. There are stories in the book that will shock you that they are in the Bible. The same is true of the world around us.
There might be no more relevant book for us and our country today than the Book of Judges.
