Imagine a police investigation with no body cams. Then imagine a police officer's testimony with no police report or transcript of what the officer said in court. For millions involved in divorce, custody, or domestic violence lawsuits, they don't have to imagine.
This video is part of our reporting on the court reporter crisis in California's family courts. We look at who is responsible for making court reporters — and the transcripts they create — disappear. Without a transcript, there is no record of what happened in court. No ability to appeal a judge's ruling, and no ability to file administrative complaints against lawyers and judges, or to get the district attorney to prosecute perjury.
For the millions of people denied accurate records of their legal proceedings, and for the judges and attorneys who don't want transcripts or cameras showing how they do their jobs in public courtrooms, we are just getting started.
