Abbey SharpTanning culture is making a comeback, and this time it is being fueled by TikTok trends, sunscreen fearmongering, tan maxxing, and claims that you can eat your sun protection instead of wearing SPF.
After being diagnosed with skin cancer at just 37, this conversation feels deeply personal. In this episode of Bite Back, I am joined by board certified dermatologist Dr. Mary Alice Mina (@drminaskin )o unpack the truth about chemical sunscreen, mineral SPF, so called sunscreen diets, tanning beds, base tans, skin aging, and melanoma prevention.
We also break down what SPF numbers actually mean, how often sunscreen should be reapplied, the areas people commonly forget to protect, and the ABCDE warning signs that may help you identify a concerning mole.
A tan is not a sign of health. It is your skin responding to UV damage. Wear the sunscreen, wear the hat, check your skin, and please get anything unusual assessed by a healthcare professional.

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸The Most Important Nutrition Conversation Parents Need To HaveAbbey Sharp2026-08-17 | The way we talk about food matters - whether it’s to our friends, family, or little sister.
Pre-teen girls are at especially high risk for developing disordered eating, and those beliefs often start with seemingly “small” comments at home. The focus should never be on “good vs. bad” foods, calories, or body shaming. Instead, let’s help kids build trust in their bodies and understand that food is fuel - not something to fear.
If you want more support navigating these conversations, I have a webinar all about raising healthy eaters and talking to kids about food, weight, and nutrition in age-appropriate ways. 💛 abbeyskitchen.com/coaching

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸Fatigue, Hair Loss, Brain Fog and Weight Gain: Is Your Thyroid Actually to Blame? (Dietitian Reacts)Abbey Sharp2026-08-11 | In today’s episode of Bite Back with Abbey Sharp, I’m joined by registered dietitian and thyroid health specialist Priscilla Swann to unpack the confusing world of thyroid nutrition, metabolism, and weight.
We explore how hypothyroidism can affect energy, digestion, body temperature, and weight, why your thyroid labs may appear normal even when you still feel terrible, and what treatment can realistically change. We also fact check popular thyroid wellness advice, including gluten free diets, Brazil nuts, bladderwrack, tyrosine, vitamin D megadoses, fluoride avoidance, and cutting out cruciferous vegetables.
Most importantly, we discuss why women should not need an abnormal blood test to justify changes in their body or prove that their symptoms deserve care. Your body is not “broken” simply because it is difficult to make smaller.
This conversation is for anyone feeling frustrated by unexplained symptoms, overwhelmed by thyroid misinformation, or exhausted by the pressure to find a pathological explanation for normal body diversity.

That doesn't automatically make a giant bowl of fruit a balanced meal. A satisfying meal isn't just about calories or volume. It also needs enough protein and healthy fats to help keep you full, energized, and satisfied. That's why I always encourage building balanced meals instead of fearing entire food groups.

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸The 10,000 Step Rule Is Not What You ThinkAbbey Sharp2026-08-08 | Another day, another problematic post from Liv Schmidt. But this one is not really about Liv. It is about how deeply diet culture has shaped the way we perceive our own bodies.
Friends, missing 2 steps, skipping 1 workout, or enjoying 1 indulgent meal will not suddenly change your body or destroy your health. ❤️ If tiny deviations from arbitrary rules make you feel like you have failed, the problem is not your step count. It is the belief that your worth depends on constant control.

This is probably one of the most common nutrition myths online, and the good news is that you do not need to go keto to lose weight.
Yes, some people with insulin resistance, PCOS, or PMOS may feel better on a lower-carb approach. But that doesn’t mean carbs are inherently fattening or that insulin spikes are the sole cause of weight gain.
Let’s talk about what the science actually says. Any PCOS girlies have thoughts?

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸Dietitian Reacts To The Oasis AppAbbey Sharp2026-07-31 | Is baby food toxic?! 🤔
Friends, food rating apps like Yuka, Olive, and Oasis are almost never the best way to make nutrition decisions. While nutrition literacy absolutely matters, these apps often oversimplify incredibly complex nutrition and toxicology science into a single score, leaving out the context that actually matters.
The presence of a contaminant does not automatically mean there’s meaningful risk. In toxicology, dose matters. And that’s exactly the kind of nuance these apps often miss.
If you’re interested in learning more, I have a long form video breaking down Yuka, and many of the same concerns apply here too.

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸Do Bananas RUIN Smoothies?Abbey Sharp2026-07-27 | @caucasianjames I have good news for you! 🍌 Bananas are perfectly fine in smoothies, and they’re a great source of potassium, fiber, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and other beneficial nutrients.
Yes, one small study found that bananas may reduce absorption of one specific subgroup of polyphenols. But that doesn’t mean bananas “cancel out” the nutrition in your smoothie. Foods are incredibly complex, and the overall nutritional benefits of adding a banana almost certainly outweigh any tiny reduction in one class of compounds.
Please don’t let wellness culture ruin bananas too. 😅

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸Is Plain Water NOT Hydrating Enough?Abbey Sharp2026-07-25 | I fear we have officially lost the plot on electrolytes. 😅
YES, replacing electrolytes is important in certain situations - like long endurance exercise, extreme heat, heavy sweating, vomiting/diarrhea, or conditions like POTS.
But for most people? Plain water is a fantastic hydrator. And let’s not forget that we get fluids and electrolytes from food, too. In fact, most North Americans are already consuming well above the recommended sodium intake.
If electrolytes help you feel your best, great! But don’t let wellness culture convince you that plain water suddenly stopped working.

We often hear people say that Ozempic and GLP1 medications are going to kill diet culture.
I don't think that's what's happening.
In this video, I explore why thinness may be losing its value as the ultimate status symbol, how wellness culture is already reinventing itself, and why trends like SkinnyTok, biohacking, optimization culture, and even AI may be pointing toward a much darker future.
Because diet culture has never really been about thinness.
It's always been about morality, status, discipline, and hierarchy.
And when one status symbol becomes too accessible, culture simply creates another.
If you've ever wondered where wellness culture is heading next, this conversation is for you.
Leave your thoughts in the comments. I genuinely think this is one of the most important conversations we've had on this channel.

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸The Wellness Industry Has A Food Fear ProblemAbbey Sharp2026-07-15 | Grocery store fearmongering has gotten completely out of control.
If you walk through a grocery store and can’t stop thinking about “glucose spikes,” “inflammation,” “toxins,” or “gut disruption,” it might be time to take a break from wellness content - or at least reset your algorithm.
Yes, nutrition marketing can be misleading, and reading ingredient lists and nutrition facts can be helpful. But viewing entire aisles as dangerous or unhealthy is not a sign of nutrition literacy. It’s often a sign that diet culture and wellness culture have hijacked the conversation.
You do not need to fear food to be healthy. Sending love to anyone struggling with this mindset. ❤️

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸Are Non-Toxic Morning Routines BS?Abbey Sharp2026-07-13 | Gentle reminder to this almond daughter and everyone else: a truly “non-toxic” morning routine doesn’t exist.
The word toxic has become one of wellness culture’s favorite buzzwords, but the reality is that toxicity depends on the dose. Water can be toxic. Salt can be toxic. Even some supplements can be harmful in excess.
What often happens in these videos is that evidence-based habits get mixed in with a whole lot of fear-based marketing and pseudoscience. And suddenly, wellness starts feeling stressful, expensive, and impossible to achieve.
Real wellness should fit your life - not take it over.

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸Please Tell Me This Isn’t A Real DietAbbey Sharp2026-07-11 | Are micro meals real or satire?? At this point, I genuinely don’t even know. 😅
What’s fascinating is that the idea doesn’t sound that ridiculous compared to some of the wellness trends we’ve seen become normalized online. As weight loss becomes increasingly medicalized through drugs like Ozempic, it feels like diet culture is evolving into something else: more rules, more rituals, more complexity, and more ways to feel “better” than everyone else.
Whether this video is satire or not, it says a lot about where diet culture may be heading.

Often, “scolding” a parent is not the right move. Parents know their kids best, and there may be factors we can’t see - from picky eating and neurodivergence to food access and budget concerns.

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸Unhinged Thoughts My ADHD Brain HasAbbey Sharp2026-06-22 | My ADHD brain really keeps going… and going… and going 😭 One minute I’m getting waxed, the next I’m planning a candle shop, questioning whether cucumbers are fruit, reliving a social interaction from 6 months ago, and convincing myself I need bangs. If you’re neurospicy, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸Fat Fasting: Good Idea Or Disaster?Abbey Sharp2026-06-21 | Fat fasting?! 😳 This might be one of the most extreme versions of the carnivore diet I’ve seen. While ketosis gets a lot of attention online, fat loss still comes down to energy balance, and this diet is packed with calories while providing virtually no fiber. Please don’t confuse “high fat” with “fat loss.”

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸This Is NOT How Diabetes WorksAbbey Sharp2026-06-20 | Do these foods cause diabetes? 🙄 These grocery store fearmongering videos are almost NEVER helpful. While diet can absolutely play a role in chronic disease risk, no single food causes diabetes, acne, or PCOS on its own. Health is influenced by genetics, environment, access to food, lifestyle, and so much more. We need less shame and more nuance.

With Science & Sass, Xoxo Abbey 🌸We Need To Talk About Cultural FoodsAbbey Sharp2026-06-17 | Dietetics is a profession that has long been white-washed, largely due to inequitable barriers to entry. And unfortunately, that means nutrition education can sometimes lack cultural humility.
Thankfully, that is starting to change. But if anyone tells you that you need to reject all your traditional foods to be healthy, it might be time to find a practitioner who is willing to meet you where you are. Food is culture, connection, and identity, and Mexican food can absolutely be part of a healthy diet.
