One precious life has departed, while another is poised to embark on a new journey. BuaBaan, a female elephant affectionately named Blooming Lotus, spent much of her life toiling in the service of humans, hauling wood in Laos. During her laborious work, she developed a hernia, which, exacerbated by her inability to rest while sick, persisted and affected her health.
BuaBaan experienced two pregnancies, both resulting in the tragic loss of her offspring; the first, a male, died shortly after birth, while the second, a female, passed away last year during training. Her persistent illness prevented her from working or conceiving again, leading her mahout to permit her rescue for a chance at a better life.
BuaBaan's rescue stands as a tribute to the memory of our dear friend David Doust, who succumbed to cancer. Before his death, David donated 15 000 Australian Dollars to Save Elephant Foundation, and, with that fund as well as contributions from friends and family in loving memory, we have turned this beautiful life to freedom. We also express gratitude to Robyn Wearne for aiding in sharing the funds that facilitated BuaBaan's journey to her new sanctuary. As David departs to a tranquil world, BuaBaan begins a new chapter in her new home at Elephant Sanctuary Laos.
