90% of the time when I sit down to write a song, I come up with ideas incredibly quickly, and they all feel like the best song I've ever written. And then they fizzle out just as quickly as they came, because finishing something is a billion times harder than starting it. I have literally thousands of abandoned ideas sitting around.
But ... what if I could just make a song out of these scraps? What if I never had to do the hard work of actually finishing the song?! DO I HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY?!? Why yes, yes I do. *demonic laughter*

I like this riff, and I think I’m gonna write a song with it
It’s light and calm and sweet and at the same time upbeat
But I can’t think of what to say
So, I’ll just write it anyway
Now I need a chorus…
This would be perfect, if only the verse fit
I don’t know how I’d mash the two together
It’s maybe a new tune, called “Once in a Blue Moon”
About the chance of finding love
But it’s already been done, there must be a million
Sad sack stories in the used bin
I don’t really want to join them...
This song will be the best song
Don’t tell me I’m wrong
This song will be the best song
Except it’s not
So I’m gonna try again
Fingerpicking makes
Everything sound great
Everything I say sounds deep and sincere
Pull my finger and I fart
Watch it linger in your heart
See, I’m making lovely art, but it also kinda stinks
Who doesn’t adore, a waltz on the floor
Followed up with a crumpet and tea
Oh right, this is Michigan that I am living in
Not London in 1903
C’mon Woodward, get it together
C’mon Woodward, time to be clever
Don’t stop now, just finish it, whatever it takes
I’m gonna try, try, try, try to grow a seed
I’m gonna try, try, try, till my fingers bleed
I’m gonna try, try, try, try, try, till I’ve used every chord
I’m gonna try, try, try, till I get it right
I’m gonna try, try, try, till the morning light
I’m gonna try, try, try, try, try, until I get bored
And then I’m gonna finish it later

I clung to a blindfold and a book
I couldnt think, I couldnt look
A car careening off the road
I spoke like a riddle, in a dream
My heart was pumping gasoline
I still was sleeping when I woke
My head, ran away, and then my heart
The whole caboodle fell apart
I didnt notice I was gone
But now, there is music, there is light
There is laughter, there is sight
I am new, and I am strong
Free me, scrub away my calloused thoughts, release me
Clean me, theres water in the creek
And I will wash away my sad defeats and start, this all anew
I thought I knew it all before
My cup was spilling on the floor
I had to pour it down the drain
Now I can fill it up anew
With something real, with something true
Im standing naked in the rain
[Chorus]
The beginners mind will see
That theres a forest for the trees
And that were smaller than the sum of who we are
With a whisper or a shout
The voice will shake you in and out
And leave you empty as a midnight boulevard Josh Woodward: Water in the Creek (Official Video)](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/yl8byo8RUlo/mqdefault.jpg)

Theres no gravity that sucked me in your orbit
Theres no magnet that was in your heart
The one restriction was the friction that was keeping us
A little too far apart
Why fight it, I was secretly delighted
I gave chase but then I let you win
You felt lovely when you loved me like a fool
But now I cant let go of your skin
You know that,
I never knew
That you, are, crazy glue, my darling
And Im stuck to you
I am cozy and I dont gonna wiggle loose
Youre honey like a finger in the beehive
The bees are buzzing in a tizzy fit
Theyre stinging but Im singing like a fool
Cuz youre as sweet as a banana split
Youre sticky like a hippie in the summer
Youre like syrup in the slushie tray
One touch of you and I will never leave
Cuz I believe that I cant get away
You know that
[Chorus]
Hold onto me
And hand in hand well follow
Hold onto me

![Josh Woodward: Nice White Liberals (Lyric Video)
I live in a nice middle-class neighborhood in Ann Arbor, one of the most liberal towns in America. Its an amazing place, with big city amenities and a small-town feel. My neighborhood is also entirely white. Which makes sense, because Washtenaw County is the 8th most economically segregated metro area in the entire country, and after centuries of systemic racism, many in the BIPOC population simply cant afford to live here.
My neighbors are Nice White Liberals. Theres a sea of yard signs dotting the landscape, talking about how immigrants are welcome here, Black Lives Matter, and that kindness is everything. I believe most of them sincerely mean that. But then, those same neighbors loudly oppose new housing developments or zoning changes to allow for denser housing. They often frame it as wanting to preserve the neighborhood character or to keep our small-town feel. Its all very understandable, I like my neighborhood and the small-town feel as well.
The problem is, a *lot* of people want to live here, and weve spent decades resisting new housing. This has driven prices into the stratosphere, and anyone who cant afford it has a long commute on clogged highways or slow buses. Many other cities are facing the same issues, some to an insane extent like the San Francisco Bay Area where I used to live, with blue-collar workers often forced to commute for hours each day.
Increased density would ease so many of these problems, but expanding single-family zoning to allow for small apartment buildings doesnt play well with many Nice White Liberals, nor does subsidized housing, unless its in somebody elses backyard. Most of them arent actively racists, but this mindset serves to perpetuate the systemic racism inherent in the status quo.
Its not enough to not be racist - we need to strive to be anti-racist. We need to move past performative yard signs and to start demanding action, neighborhood character be damned.
Heres a catchy little toe-tapper for you.

In This House We Believe
Says the yard sign tucked beneath the cherry tree
And the white picket fence
In a cul-de-sac where children play with friends
All, the nice white liberals
Taking walks on the nice white liberal street
Harry smiles, and a says to Jane,
I dont see color, everyones the same
While Jose, is mowing his grass
He commuted for an hour to earn his scraps
All the nice white liberals
Taking walks on the nice white liberal street
They say intentions paved the road to hell
But I can say we all mean well
Cause Im a nice white liberal myself
Shane and Brooke, went by on the path
Shes got a Black Lives Matter emblem on her mask
She says, I feel their pain, with all my heart,
Yeah, the poor need homes, just not in my backyard
