Well, you know I was a farmer when I was a younger man
Until the fields got paved with asphalt and they took away my land
And now the monument before us, it stands so tall and proud
A glorious new minimall upon the earth that I once plowed
I sold my house out in the country to rent a trailor by the mall
It's not so bad except the kitchen's just a little small
I got a job at the local hardware store, where I work till five o'clock
But now they built another home improvement palace down the block
What's the sense of all this home improvement
I liked my home the way it was before
If this is what our town has come to stand for
I don't think we need improvement anymore
I lost my job at the hardware store when the owner closed it down
He said the rent was just too high to keep his family in this town
He sold his house to an executive, who tore it down to build anew
A million dollar mansion with a $20 view
What's the sense of all this home improvement
I liked my home the way it was before
If this is what our town has come to stand for
I don't think we need improvement anymore
Someday this town will reach its goal and everyone will have
A Mercedes in the driveway of their subdivision land
Clear the way for progress by demolishing the past
100 miles an hour and we're going nowhere fast
What's the sense of all this home improvement
I liked my home the way it was before
If this is what our town has come to stand for
I don't think we need improvement anymore

![Josh Woodward: Old Man Blanchard (Acoustic Performance)
The Blanchard is a river in my hometown of Findlay, Ohio. It has a massive flood a few years back that put the town underwater, and this song came out soon after.

Old Man Blanchard took a walk downtown to the edge of the Main Street bridge
I sat myself beside him on the shallow muddy ridge
I asked him why he comes and goes, and why he never stays
He said, son, Ive always been here, I have never gone away
I saw the black gold in the streets, and I watched it all go bust
I saw the Great Depression, I saw fortunes turn to dust
The people only see me when I make my presence known
But, they only really love me when I stay inside my home
Old Man Blanchard, he will run and he will crawl
Old Man Blanchard, he will rise and he will fall
The silver citys shining but the skies are turning grey
Then old Man Blanchard with the wave of his hammer come to take it all away
I looked at him and told him everyone thinks that hes cruel
I said, youve been called a bastard and a traitor and a fool
There are people who would trap you and would throw you in a pen
So whats it like to feel the wrath of 20,000 men?
He stopped to think a moment and he turned to me and said,
Theyve fought me for a hundred years to keep me in my bed
You can build a wall around me, you can trap me in a dam
But when the day is over, I am just what I am
[Chorus]
The sky was growing darker, so I went out on my way
As I headed out, I turned around to him to say
You look so tall and mighty but inside youre just like me
You only want to leave this place and head on out to sea

These feet have carried me as far as I will go
Across the field to where the wind had ceased to blow
That day, when sorrow filled the air and all the blackbirds scattered everywhere
And you had gone as far as you would go
In my reflection, you are staring back at me
My eyes are mirrors of the dreams you used to see
But now Im fumbling in the dark, where all the memories are far apart
And there I lost the forest for the trees
In the gloaming of the day, the words are darkening away
Take another look
Theres no more pages in this book
The epilogue was written in the dirt
The storys at an end
Its time to put away my pen
And join the you by the earth
There was a tremble in the marrow of my bones
Distorted and contorted like a worn out megaphone
And through the bellow and the bluster, I was shaking, I was flustered
With a body full of star-crossed chromosomes
And through the clatter there emerged a single voice
A familiar sound I hadnt heard since I was just a boy
And all at once my fears were lifted as the echoes slowly drifted
To the center of the amplifying void
And I followed like a child, so carefree and so wild
[Chorus]
Well theres music everywhere
The voices carry through the air
But Im not listening Josh Woodward: Epilogue (Acoustic Performance)](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/UKASNufVufo/mqdefault.jpg)
