"My name is Joseph Soto. I'm the recently appointed President-elect of AIGA Los Angeles. I'm also the Director of Art and Brand at an agency called Nickerson. And it is honestly an honor to open up for you all today in this little city I call home.

"Design + Performance" is about closing that gap between what's in your head and what actually happens. And it answers questions such as, do people really care about this?

Does it meet them where they are and not where you think they are? And can it stretch? Can it evolve and can it adapt? Does it still feel true to what it meant when you first concepted the idea?

Over the next few days, maybe you'll ask yourself, what am I performing for? Who am I designing for? And what would it mean to design something that actually moves someone? My hope is that you walk away from this week feeling connected to each other, maybe feeling recharged from one another, and maybe even feeling ready to go do something new.

So let's create, let's design, and let's perform."
