Josef Suk composed his Serenade for Strings, Op. 6, in 1892 when he was just 18 years old. He wrote it at the urging of his mentor Antonín Dvořák, who suggested that he compose something more cheerful than his customary melancholy fare. Nevertheless, there are moments of wistfulness in the Serenade, such as in the third movement, Andante — the first few minutes of which is explored in this video. Suk's Serenade was a great success and Brahms even endorsed its publication.
