Entry 58: It took me a couple days to actually get my bearings on this one. I left with just one thought: "Huh." Usually, I know what I want to say about a movie within a few hours, if not right away; and of course things will change as I mull them over, but it's rare that my feelings change drastically. But with Joker, I genuinely wasn't sure what I wanted to say or even really what I felt.
But I figured it out after cut-cut-cutting the heck out of my draft. And here's the result of that. And a clown nose to boot!
Notes on the ending: discussion begins at 13:44, but the review that leads up to it is not spoiler-heavy. Additionally, I made an error in discussing casting, and I realized far too late in retrospect that I should have just deleted it at the time but waited a while to do so. A pinned comment clarifies the logic of the removed section without the genuinely bad thing I said that undermined it. So, I'm sorry that that happened and am still ashamed of myself nearly two months later.
