Johnson County leaders are considering a new criminal mental health court designed to keep people with mental health needs out of jail and better connected to treatment and other services.

The proposed specialized court would focus on people whose criminal charges are tied to mental health diagnoses or substance abuse struggles. The Johnson County Attorney’s Office is asking county supervisors to approve a contract with the Iowa Primary Care Association to help launch the program, including funding for care coordination and treatment.
