This description is mainly meant to provide context for the video’s quality, the missing clips, and also the reason behind its creation. As I mentioned before in the video about theatrical and home sound systems, I have a connection to them through my childhood, where I remember having a sound system and a DVD with different DTS, Dolby Digital Sound, THX, and other demos. That disc unfortunately ended up completely disintegrated, lost to time.
And one day, while browsing through Internet Archive, I happened to type the word “THX” and, while digging through the depths of the internet, I found the original disc I had as a kid. It was incredible. All the memories of seeing those old animations that are no longer online anymore felt surreal. So I had a mission: to take the original animations, especially since the disc had a double recording, one version from 2005 and another from the 1990s. That’s where the difference between some modern-looking clips and older ones comes from.
Unfortunately, while editing and remastering these clips, the source uploaded online was already somewhat damaged, so remastering and restoring them was not an easy task at all. So whenever I tried to render everything together inside Media Encoder to put it all into one single video, the editing programs I use would constantly crash, since the remastered files used an encoding format that practically no longer exists and is extremely difficult to emulate or re-encode properly.
Because of that, I ended up using OBS Studio and recording the videos one by one manually this way.
You’re probably wondering why I didn’t just use already enhanced and remastered versions that surely exist somewhere on the internet and simply put them together. The truth is that I wanted to use the original content directly from the original DVD itself, not modern remastered uploads with higher resolution. I say this because that’s where the authenticity lies, preserving all the content from both DVDs while restoring and remastering them into better quality and resolution.
Also, at the end of all the demos, the DVD included the small THX Wow short film, which featured different Lucasfilm movies that incorporated this sound system alongside the beautiful music of John Williams. This is the original version of the short film, not the ones uploaded on YouTube, so I’m happy to bring the original version of the short, remastered in the best way possible.
To finish the explanation, there are some clips that were not remastered, mainly because I had already remastered them previously in my other video about sound systems, so I simply omitted those. On top of that, most of them were completely damaged, and every time I tried opening the video files, they were full of glitches. The image quality was absolutely terrible. They were some of the hardest files I’ve ever had to remaster, but thankfully I was able to salvage several of them.
