Phil Gammage's song "Johnny Lee" tells the story of the amoral misadventures of the American folklore hero Johnny Lee, who traveled in the Ohio River Valley during the years following the Civil War. With it's era photographs, the video conjures up a world of inviting women and emotionally damaged war survivors trying to piece their lives together during Reconstruction ... a difficult period in American history. In the 1955 cult film "Night of the Hunter", the character of Harry Powell (portrayed in the film by Robert Mitchum) was based in part on the story of the real-life Johnny Lee.
