Critical Issues Commentary | John the Baptist and Prophets to Nations, Part 7 – The Prophetic Calling of Every Believer @CICministry | Uploaded January 2021 | Updated October 2024, 23 hours ago.
In this episode we discuss the prophetic calling of every believer. First Corinthians 14:31 tells us that we can all prophesy, one by one. This is not about receiving new revelation; to “prophesy” is to preach the gospel, warn of the judgment to come and bring forth valid implications and applications of Scripture. We discuss the Reformation doctrine of the priesthood of every believer and show that it is our right and obligation to judge prophecy.

The restoration of prophecy for every believer was important to both Luther and Calvin. The alternative was that only the teaching magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church had the authority to prophesy. We quote both Calvin and Luther, showing that the Reformation view was that prophecy was the teaching of the Word and proclamation of the terms of the gospel.
